Pantheistic Solipsism
Essentially, it means world as myth. Metafiction, (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pantheistic_solipsism) it’s something I think about quite a lot.
Do you ever feel like you are living in a parallel dimension of your own design? I do. It sometimes seems like a fiction, you know? Like every day has this complex drama unfolding, and it’s this weird paradise that I invented as a kid, in my wildest imaginings.
I remember, as a child going to the circus and watching the crazy acts and wanting more. Now, I have my very own clowns, who I love. I remember as a kid slip and sliding and imagining how great it would be to keep going, faster and more intense. Yeah, my friends organized that today. Best slip and slide, ever! As a kid actor, all I wanted to do was be one of the crew guys who seemed to be having all the fun on set. Yeah, done. Don’t get me started on the parties. Pretty much better than my best, most fantastical dreams. These dreams were born of innocence and pure enthusiasm.
I’ve been feeling that I need to start writing some new dreams. This blog is part of it, just a bit. One of the methods of causing idea to become reality is a physical representation. So when I write about a golden age, or a way to relate with others, it makes it closer to real. But then to really get things going one needs a big audience.
Like the audience for the Dark Knight, how many will envision a mythic hero out there doing the things they never would after seeing that movie. In recent years, the Hollywood dream machine has perfected that art, the art of creating mythic worlds. It just takes time. I imagine a beautiful world sometime in the near future when children ho have only known a world of Harry Potter grow into adults believing that magic is real and that they are the ones who can see. How long until real super heroes with real super powers start emerging? Comiccon in San Diego this weekend is the biggest thing in media. Our modern myths are growing in power and saturation at an exponential rate.
I believe that each individual can create reality. Specifically by creating. Painters do it. Filmmakers do it. Writers do it.
But, you gotta believe.
I’ve decided to do a little experiment, to prove my little theory. I’m writing a sci-fi book. Maybe a novella. Maybe more. But I am creating it as an experiment in metafiction. I’m testing the coincidences. I’m testing the magic of it. I’m testing the belief. I’ve been up all night writing. I’m pretty much thrilled with the idea. I promise, the story is good for all.
We shall see.
